Heroes One and All

The 10th Annual Heroes One and All luncheon Nov. 9 provided an opportunity to honor U.S. veterans and current military service members. Nearly 500 guests filled the Arizona Biltmore’s McArthur Ballroom for the occasion.

The luncheon was presented by the Veterans Medical Leadership Council, whose mission is to provide assistance to veterans as they transition back into civilian life. That might mean emergency financial help, a place to stay, airfare support, medical help and more.

Lieutenant Commander Heidi Squier Kraft, U.S. Navy (ret.) gave the keynote address. A clinical psychologist, she now serves as a consultant for the U.S. Navy and Marine Corps’ Combat Stress Control programs.

Each branch of the military was represented at the luncheon, and stood as their individual anthems were played.

The afternoon also served to spotlight the military grand marshals for the Phoenix Veterans Day parade.

The 2012 honorary chairman was Captain Paul Morell, U.S, Navy (ret.), US Airways vice president of safety and compliance. Sam Young, VMLC president, served as the day’s host. Rita Brock-Perini was the luncheon chair.

The entire luncheon is moving, but as in previous years, the conclusion of the event with a performance of “Proud to be an American” by April Manchester Miller left few dry eyes in the house.
