DFA hosts 49th Annual Desert Ball, presents 13 debutantes

The 49th Annual Desert Ball was held in the Phoenician Grand Ballroom on Dec. 20. The black-tie occasion drew 500 guests for dinner, dancing and the presentation of 13 Desert Foundation Auxiliary debutantes.

DFA selects and presents to the community young ladies from the Scottsdale, Paradise Valley and Carefree areas at the annual ball. Proceeds from the ball are distributed to charitable organizations that benefit the people and children of the Scottsdale School District, Paradise Valley and Carefree. This year’s recipients are the Arizona Friends of Foster Children Foundation and Kitchen on the Street.

Robert A. Royal presented the young ladies. After dinner and the presentation, the Hamptons provided dance music. Ann-Eve Drachman Berry served as the ball chairman, and Bren Dodenhoff served as her co-chairman.

Thirteen young women from the Scottsdale, Paradise Valley and Carefree areas were presented at the 48th Annual Desert Ball on Dec. 21, 2013, at the Phoenician. The ball, hosted by the Desert Foundation Auxiliary, is an annual affair that draws family, friends and community members. The debutantes are college freshmen.

The room was awash in candle glow as hundreds of candles surrounded by seasonal greenery were suspended from the ceiling. Tables were designed by White House Design Studio and sported organza cloths embellished with silver and white metallic circles. Centerpieces comprised pink roses, hydrangeas and orchids.

The evening included the presentation, dinner and dancing to the music of Snake Eyes.

Kimberlee Padilla chaired the event with Christine Planck serving as vice-chair.  Proceeds benefit Comfy Cozys for Chemo, Mother’s Grace and The Harp Foundation. Shaun Bracken is the president of the Desert Foundation Auxiliary.

Desert Ball

The Desert Foundation Auxiliary hosted its annual ball Dec. 22 in the Grand Ballroom of the Phoenician. The 46th annual event presented 17 debutantes from Scottsdale, Paradise Valley and Carefree.

For some, the Desert Ball is a family tradition. Four young women have grandmothers who are or were associate members of DFA, and their mothers were debutantes. Madeline Arendt’s mother, Wendy Arendt, was a debutante in 1982. Molly Argue’s  mother, Maggie Argue, was a 1986 debutante, Camaley Jennings’ mother, Julia Patrick, was a debutante in 1979, and Alex Mierzwa’s mother, Nan Hunter Howlett, was a 1976 debutante.

The beautiful floral centerpieces were designed by White House Design Studio. Following dinner, which featured herb-crusted filet of beef, guests danced to the music of Snake Eyes.

Cathy Reahard serves as president of DFA, and Michelle Carpenter was the ball chair. The organization uses proceeds from the ball to support the work of nonprofit agencies that serve the needs of Maricopa County. This year’s event raised funds for Teach for America, Family Promise and Cortney’s Foundation.
