The Arizona Humane Society packed the house again as more than a thousand guests attended the Compassion With Fashion luncheon, its annual fundraiser. The event was March 29 at the Arizona Biltmore.

This year’s theme was Pets Make Life Sweet! and sweet things were everywhere, from silent auction items to table décor. But the sweetest things of all? The adoptable pets on the runway. In all, 20 pets found adoptive homes and happily went home with their new human companions.

After the pets, which proud children and adult  guided down the runway, professional models took over, modeling current fashions from Biltmore Fashion Park retailers, including Bonafide, Mae & Marie, Macy's, Calypso and White House Black Market.

Katherine Cecala and Andrea Marconi chaired the luncheon. The event benefits the Humane Society’s programs and services, which include an ambulance unit, trauma center, spay/neuter initiatives, veterinary and wellness services, and education programs.

Compassion With Fashion

The 2013 edition of Compassion With Fashion took Fashion: 7th Inning Fetch as its theme. The successful event drew 1,056 guests to the Arizona Biltmore on March 23 and grossed nearly $482,000 to be used for the general care of sheltering, healing and adopting out pets in need as well as the Arizona Humane Society’s life-saving programs and services. In addition, 14 pets were adopted by happy new owners.

The 15th annual luncheon honored the Betty McRae and her two daughters, Beth and Stephanie. The inspiration for the perennially successful luncheon was sparked 15 years ago in the McRae family living room.

The Parade of Paws comprised 11 dogs (two of whom were on the buddy system and needed to be adopted together), each with its own baseball nickname. They cruised the runway to baseball favorites such as “Take Me Out to the Ballgame” and “Hit Me With Your Best shot.” Four cats were also available for adoption. Human models sported fashions from My Sister's Closet and Well Suited.

Kiffie Robbins and Kim Carkhuff co-chaired the event.

Compassion With Fashion

The ever-fun, ever-adorable Arizona Humane Society fundraising luncheon was March 17 at the Westin Kierland Resort and Spa. The event drew 1,000 attendees, facilitated 16 pet adoptions (100 percent of the animals available) and grossed $450,000. This year's theme was "All You Need is Love," and the '60s Beatles era figured into the day's decor and even dessert.

Among the lucky pets with new homes is 9-year-old Labrador Cody, who went to a family with a 9-year-old daughter. Fourteen-week old Lucy, a Chihuahua who lost an eye when she was hit by a car, also found a new home, as did several kittens, including Sparkles, a kitten found in a cardboard box behind a dumpster.

Tess Loo of event sponsor My Sister’s Closet was chair of the décor committee and responsible for the creative table centerpieces. Additional sponsors included 3TV, PetSmart and Hill’s Science Diet.

A silent auction featured items from bicycles to pet clothes and a cat tree. Among the items was a custom pendant designed by award-winning jeweler Cornelis Hollander. In addition, guests could bid on 24 limited edition Petcasso sculptures designed and created by 24 local and national artists.

Funds raised from the event will go directly toward the programs and services of the Arizona Humane Society. Melinda Morrison Gulick and Kiffie Robbins co-chaired the event.
