Arizona is Up with People

More than 800 guests attended the March 16 “Arizona is Up with People” gala at the University of Arizona Student Union Grand Ballroom. The evening served as a celebration of the living history and future of Up with People, the organization’s special relationship with Mexico and the Arizona Centennial.

The event raised $105,000 to benefit the University of Arizona Libraries Special Collections, now home of the Up with People archives, its International Alumni Association and personal archives of founder and chairman emeritus J. Blanton Belk and his wife, Betty.

Attendees were welcomed with a message from Mexico’s first lady Señora Margarita Zavala de Calderón. Up with People’s Cast A performed. The group comprises 106 students from 21 countries.

Grupo Danza Xunutzi from Sonora Mexico helped celebrate the group’s Mexican relationship. Captain Eugene Cernan, the last man to walk on the moon, introduced a show-stopping rendition of “Moon Rider,” performed by Walter Belcher and Cast A.

Speakers included Carla Stoffle, dean of the University of Arizona libraries; Jeff Zadroga, alumni association president; Alain L. Thiry, Up with People CEO; and J. Blanton Belk.

Event executive producers were Ken Ashby and Maris Segal of Prosody Creative Services.
