ALS Raises $600K to Support Patients, Families

The ALS Association Arizona Chapter raised a total of $600,000 for ALS patients living with the incurable disease during a series of virtual and socially distanced fall fundraising events.

The organization’s campaign kicked off Nov. 13 and 14 with the signature Walk to Defeat ALS, this year in a virtual format, which raised more than $420,000. For walk participants who raised more than $1,000, the association held a car parade at Phoenix Zoo’s ZooLights, complete with complimentary treats, car decorating and photos with Ghostbusters, Star Wars and Marvel characters. The Tucson Speedway car parade for families who fundraised in southern Arizona also offered snacks, car decorating and photos with renowned drivers. Participants who opted to stay home were treated to a virtual ceremony with chapter representatives and families living with ALS. Sponsors for both events included Black Rock Coffee Bar, Cactus Corn Kettle Corn, Einstein Bagels, Harmony Hospice and HarmonICE.

On Nov. 28, the association held its annual Bite Nite, raising an additional $180,000. Hosted by Catherine Anaya and Larry Gaydos, guests were treated to an exciting live auction led by Letitia Frye, live music from The Hamptons and a delicious drink demonstration from the expert bartenders at Ling & Louie’s. VIP ticket holders could choose from an in-person dining experience days prior to the gala at several local restaurants.

Fun at a drive-in double feature

The fall fundraising campaign concluded with a holiday drive-in movie feature at Digital Drive-In AZ. More than 70 families watched back-to-back showings of Elf and National Lampoon’s Christmas Vacation while enjoying drinks from Black Rock Coffee Barr and snacks from Cactus Kettle Corn.

Money raised from the events goes toward education, support groups, access to care, advocacy and finding a cure for the currently fatal disease.
