YWCA Hosts Gloria Steinem

On Tues., Oct. 30, the YWCA Maricopa County will host Gloria Steinem, an American feminist, journalist and social and political activist who became nationally recognized as a leader of, and media spokeswoman for, the women's liberation movement in the late 1960s and 1970s. The event will be at the Ritz-Carlton Phoenix.

“We are honored to host such a powerful and important advocate for women as Gloria Steinem,” comments Dana Campbell-Saylor, YWCA CEO. “Gloria’s message will resonate across multiple generations and will challenge the audience to fight social injustice.”

A prominent writer and political figure, Steinem has founded numerous organizations and projects, and has been the recipient of many awards and honors. She travels in the U.S. and other countries as an organizer and lecturer, and is a frequent media spokeswoman on issues of equality. She is particularly interested in the shared origins of sex and race caste systems, gender roles and child abuse as roots of violence, nonviolent conflict resolution, the cultures of indigenous peoples and organizing across boundaries for peace and justice.

Steinem lives in New York City and is at work on Road to the Heart: America As if Everyone Mattered, a book about her more than 30 years on the road as a feminist organizer.
