UMOM Opens Parsons Village in Sunnyslope Area
The grand opening of Parsons Village, UMOM’s newest affordable housing community in Phoenix, was held April 5 at Casa de Paz Sahuaro Apartments in Sunnyslope. Guests and residents enjoyed a reception in the community’s 5,000 square foot community center during a brief presentation followed by the ribbon cutting and a tour of the campus.
Speakers at the event included Phoenix Mayor Greg Stanton, Councilman Bill Gates, Arizona Department of Housing Director Michael Trailor, Darlene Newsom, UMOM CEO; and two UMOM residents.
Investments from the Arizona Department of Housing and The Bob & Renee Parsons Foundation allowed UMOM to demolish the dilapidated original complex and construct 48 new one, two and three-bedroom apartments now known as Parsons Village. Each home is equipped with appliances, including a washer and dryer. The community center has a kitchen, elevator, fitness area, computer lab, youth programming, a playground and picnic tables.
Residents will be able to take advantage of youth programming that includes tutoring by Brophy students for the young people and life skills classes and employment services for adults.
Renee Parsons, co-founder with her husband, Bob Parsons, of The Bob & Renee Parsons Foundation cut the ribbon.
