Celebration of the Worker Event Raises $55K
St. Joseph the Worker held its 6th Annual Celebration of the Worker Breakfast event Sept. 25. The virtual occasion raised nearly $55,000 to support SJW’s lifechanging programs and services provided to disadvantaged individuals by:
- Providing 1,834 individuals with transportation to and from work for a month through bus passes
- Providing 1,100 jobseekers with appropriate work attire and shoes
- Providing 275 newly working tradesmen with the required hand tools for their jobs
- Putting 138 individuals back to work, thus breaking the cycle of poverty and/or homelessness for 138 families
“St. Joseph the Worker has been here throughout the pandemic to help those who have lost their jobs become employed again to continue taking care of their families,” said Brent Downs, St. Joseph the Worker executive director. “Our mission has never been as critical as now and because we are 100 percent privately funded, our success depends solely on the generous support from the community. This has been a difficult year for all, but you showed up for us through our annual breakfast and we couldn’t be more grateful! Grateful for our community, sponsors and everyone who made this event possible.”
The Celebration of the Worker Breakfast was emceed by Rick DeBruhl, award-winning network television broadcaster, and featured an expert Q&A session with Chris Camacho, Greater Phoenix Economic Council president and CEO. Those who tuned in also heard firsthand from SJW’s 2020 Client of the Year, a man who overcame a life-long struggle with addiction, homelessness and long-term incarceration, and has since found success with the help of SJW.
