Milestones marked at annual holiday affair

The ASU President’s Club celebrated 30 years of support for the university Dec. 3, 2014, with its annual holiday dinner. President Michael Crow and former Arizona State University Foundation President Lonnie Ostrom presented awards to the organization’s founding members: Karen and Bob Hobbs, Barbara and Nap Lawrence, and Bob Bulla. Crow also recognized the 2014 Milestone Members.

This year represented a milestone for the university as well as Crow unveiled the presented members with the newly unveiled ASU Charter. Crow walked members through the charter’s tenets, which affirm the New American University vision as a reality and one that is being modeled by others around the world.

The event also served as a welcome to Steven Tepper, new dean of the Herberger Institute for Design and the Arts, and entertainment included dance and jazz performances from Herberger Institute students.

The Arizona State University President’s Club Holiday Dinner drew its largest attendance in the event’s history with almost 180 guests. The dinner was held at the Westin Kierland Resort on Dec. 11.

The young musical guests, Simply Three, from ASU's school of music, credited Professor Deanna Swoboda with helping make the group a success.

Milestone President’s Club members were recognized and included 25-year members Ann and Jim Barrett, Carol Richardson, John Richardson, and Diane and Gary Tooker.

ASU President’s Club Holiday Dinner

Members of the ASU President’s Club enjoyed “Sharing the Season,” a holiday dinner, on Dec. 5 at the Arizona Biltmore Resort and Spa.

Under the direction of Bartlett Evans, the ASU Concert Choir performed works of such masters as Mozart and Brahms, while students in the ensemble shared their personal and educational stories.

Co-chair Gary Tooker and Pres. Michael Crow recognized President’s Club milestone members for their contributions over the years. These included Kathleen and Al Gardner and Don Tapia for 25 years, and Monnie and Martin Calfee, Denise and Bob Delgado, and Victoria and Gary Tiepelman for 20 years. Tooker applauded the membership’s “diversity of excellence,” while thanking all for “providing the means to improve life on campus, locally and far beyond our own communities.”

Crow highlighted updates on several ASU international partnerships supported by the President’s Club and shared news that ASU is one of the country’s top 5 producers of Fulbright student-scholar award winners. He also announced that the ASU student body now reflects the socio-economic demographics of Arizona.

ASU President’s Club Holiday Dinner

Heat lamps and cozy fires helped warm the chilly evening as guests, many with candy-cane martinis, milled around the patio of the Montelucia Resort for the cocktail hour at the party to honor long-term ASU President’s Club members. Later, dinner was served in the Castillo Lucena.

The celebration honored long-term ASU President’s Club members and featured performances of the ASU Saxophone Studio Program throughout the evening, highlighting a repertoire of classical and contemporary pieces. Director Tim McAllister spoke about the international acclaim the group has garnered and the innovative teaching methods used to prepare students for their careers and as community leaders.

ASU President Michael Crow shared how funds provided by President’s Club members were utilized to bring to fruition two projects. The first was a meeting with science fiction author Neal Stephenson at a Future Tense conference that led to the formation of the Center for Science and the Imagination and a collaboration with Google X. The second was SkySong conferences that led to a meeting with Mark Andreessen, an American entrepreneur best known for his early work – Mosaic and Netscape – to popularize the World Wide Web, and a collaboration to take five ASU courses to the highest level of digital connectivity.

In addition to recognizing 5-, 10-, 15- and 20-year members, the evening recognized Lorana and Mickey Whiting and Cheryl and Ed Sucato for their 25-year commitment to the President’s Club. Ten new members were welcomed at the event.
