Aetna Foundation Grants $65K for Anti-Bullying Campaign
SPOT 127, KJZZ’s Youth Media Center will receive $65,000 from the Aetna Foundation’s Cultivating Healthy Communities program to implement a peer-to-peer multimedia bullying and cyberbullying prevention project.
“We have students from a wide variety of backgrounds who come together to tell their stories in a safe learning environment,” said SPOT 127 executive director Kristy Roschke. “Our innovative educational program offers hands-on training that enables students to create multimedia pieces that shine a light on issues facing their communities. We are absolutely thrilled to have the support of the Aetna Foundation’s Cultivating Healthy Communities program so our students can create important and impactful messages for their peers.”
The youth media center provides free digital media training to nearly 300 students in the Valley each year. The new project, which aims to bring awareness to and prevent bullying and cyberbullying, will feature content produced by SPOT 127 high school participants. The students will research, conduct interviews with experts and draw on their own experiences.
“The Aetna Foundation is committed to addressing the social determinants of health in order to reduce health disparities,” said Dr. Garth Graham, president of the Aetna Foundation. “By identifying community-specific challenges, and unique ways to combat them, this year’s grantees are a shining example of organizations who strive to make a measurable and positive local health impact. We are honored to contribute towards the great work they are doing in pursuit of health equity.”
The finished series will be distributed in local schools through social media during the fall 2018 and spring 2019 semesters.
