‘Poet of the Violin’ Records at MIM

The 299-seat MIM (Musical Instrument Museum) Music Theater was designed to give concertgoers an extraordinary, intimate experience. In the past 17 months, it has hosted musicians ranging from Jordin Sparks to jazz master Ahmad Jamal. This month, acclaimed violinist Joshua Bell will release the first commercial album recorded at MIM.

Bell and his recital partner, pianist Jeremy Denk, recorded their new album, “French Impressions,” in Nov. 2010 while they were in town for a performance at MIM. The CD, which will be released Jan. 10, offers an interpretation of works by Saint-Saëns, Ravel and Franck.

“The goal for any producer is to find a venue that has suitable acoustics and also makes the artist feel as comfortable as possible,” says Steven Epstein, the CD’s multiple-GRAMMY-winning producer. “The MIM Music Theater has the perfect balance of those elements and was the ideal location for Joshua and Jeremy’s collaboration.”

Bell is often referred to as the “poet of the violin” and his 2004 album, “Romance of the Violin,” was named Classical CD of the Year by Billboard Magazine. Bell performed all of the violin solos in The Red Violin, helping the film win an Oscar for Best Original Score. Denk has appeared as a soloist with many major orchestras, including Atlanta, Dallas, Houston, Philadelphia and the London Philharmonic.

“With the release of this CD, we join other great museums including the Grace Rainy Rogers Auditorium at the Met in recording works of art,” says Charly Brems, production manager at MIM.

“The MIM Theater was designed to be an optimal recording space with its acoustics, top-of-the-line recording equipment and handpicked instruments including a Steinway Model D grand concert piano that has been tuned especially for the space.”
