The Scottsdale Museum of Contemporary Art (SMoCA) wants to exchange sweat, desire and human connection at the upcoming Arm Wrestling for Art event!
The tri-annual fundraiser inspires museum-goers to become spontaneous performers, encourages artists to strong-arm gallerists, and challenges museums to redefine community engagement!
For $10, Tania Katan, SMoCA’s “Producer of Shenanigans” or more formally known as SMoCA Lounge Program Coordinator, is offering community members a lesson in arm wrestling from a fitness expert, a short talk given by a curator of note about the artwork arm wrestlers will compete for, and, of course, the opportunity to win the aforementioned original work of art.
Only in its first year, Arm Wrestling for Art has already attracted the likes of renowned artist Eric Fischl to make a drawing for one of the events.
“Tania Katan is doing her best to put some muscle into the Valley’s performance scene. Arm wrestling works for people who go both ways—lefties and righties—and even those who are biceps-questioning.
– Bill Wyman, former arts editor of NPR and Salon.com.
“I left the event with a throbbing arm, a seriously hoarse throat, and new strategies for psyching out the competition. Can’t wait for the next one!”
– Adrienne Jenik, Director of Herberger Institute School of Art, Arizona State University
So…For fitness junkie, art collector, grandmother, skate-punk, or architect, head into the museum, sign a waiver, roll up your sleeves, and throw-down to support local artists!
Proceeds from the $10 Arm Wrestling for Art ticket sales go toward another tri-annual SMoCA Lounge event called Good ‘N Plenty Artist Grant.
