The Scottsdale Museum of Contemporary Art (SMoCA) is hosting several special Japanese-themed events this November including films, an Ikebana flower arranging workshop and lectures on Japanese architecture and art to complement the museum’s fall exhibition Narrow Road to the Interior: Contemporary Japanese Artists

Nov. 7 Origins of Traditional Japanese Art

Dr. Claudia Brown, former curator of Asian Art and current ASU art history faculty member, provides historical context for the contemporary work found in SMoCA’s Narrow Road to the Interior.

Nov. 14 Tokyo Waka (film)*

A carefully etched, lyrical portrait of Tokyo and its denizens seen through renderings of the rich life of crows, directed by John Haptas and Kristine Samuelson.“Visually arresting and poetic. A masterwork.”— Tobias Wolff

Nov. 15 Wabi Sabi Lunch + Lit book discussion

“Wabi Sabi” written by Mark Reibstein and Ed Young. SMoCA’s Assistant Curator, Claire C. Carter, will lead the book discussion with a short presentation. ($10 for lunch). RSVP to friendsofsmoca@sccarts.org 

Nov. 16 Discover Ikebana: Japanese Flower Arranging

Patricia Kuffler, Assistant Professor of Ikebana, Ikenobo School, shares the history and demonstrates the creation of several floral arrangements. An arrangement will be raffled at the end of the program.

Nov. 21 Japanese Architecture: Beauty Within the Ordinary

ASU Assistant Professor of Design and internationally-recognized architect and writer Jason Griffiths investigates dame, or beauty within the ordinary, in the buildings of Atelier Bow Wow, Akira Sakamoto and Kazuo Shinohara.
