Junior League Of Phoenix Foundation Announces Its 2019 Community Education & Wellness Mini-Grants

The Junior League of Phoenix Foundation has announced its 2019 community education and wellness mini-grants awarded to the Junior League of Phoenix in support of programs that focus on empowering underserved populations. Grants totaling more than $21,000 will benefit key JLP partnerships with the Arizona Science Center, Homeward Bound the City of Phoenix, and Maricopa County Food System Coalition.

“Junior League of Phoenix Foundation grants are awarded each year to programs that address community needs,” said Cathy Brown, JLPF president. “Each of our grant-funded partners use an innovative, volunteer-driven approach to address community needs. Together, we can increase our outreach and build healthy communities. By implementing our grants with a broad coalition of community partners and trained Junior League of Phoenix volunteers, we are able to maximize cost synergies, improve metrics and test innovations.”

2019 JLP Foundation Grant Projects

Raising Our Children’s Knowledge by Educating Through Science Teacher Launch: ROCKETS supports early childhood teachers to build science and technology knowledge and resources. Arizona’s teachers are under-resourced and spend their own money on classroom supplies, creating a void for science and technology curriculum and resources. Through a partnership with the Arizona Science Center, the Junior League of Phoenix leverages trained early childhood professionals and an evidence-based science and technology curriculum to train teachers and provide science kits with curriculum and supplies for teachers.

Phoenix Food Day & Health Fest 2019:  Phoenix Food Day & Health Fest is a collaborative effort to bring information, resources, and education to families regarding the importance of healthy eating and active living. The event will showcase hands-on gardening and cooking demonstrations with local chefs using seasonal produce, fitness activities for families, information on health resources, and medical screenings.

Phoenix Food Day & Health Fest is hosted in partnership with: the City of Phoenix, Cartwright School District, Maricopa County Food System Coalition, Fry’s/Kroger, Vitalyst Health Foundation, Valley of the Sun United Way, FitPHX, AZ Sustainability Alliance, Maricopa County Department of Public Health, Green on Purpose, the Milwaukee Brewers Inc., AZ Health Zone, University of Arizona Cooperation Extension Maricopa County, and Grand Canyon University. The event will be held on: October 26, 2019, at the Cartwright Community Garden, from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m.

Kids in the Kitchen: KITK was created to support child and caregiver knowledge of healthy food and eating habits. In partnership with Homeward Bound, the KITK program will offer ongoing trainings for parents and food demonstrations. The trainings will provide knowledge and resources for families living in food deserts with a goal of sparking a movement to create local community gardens and develop healthy eating habits.
