Children’s Museum Seeks Donations for New Non-Directive Art Experience

The Children’s Museum of Phoenix is asking visitors to bring in materials for their new Maker Space — an open-ended, non-directive art experience that encourages children and adults to make anything they’d like with a variety of materials.

The space, which will be housed inside the museum’s Art Studio, will allow children to use their imagination to plan a project, devise a strategy to implement the plan, solve problems and even collaborate with others to create their own “thing-a-ma-jig.”

“We are so excited to have a Maker Space at the Museum,” said Marion Wiener, director of marketing and communications for the museum. “This space allows children to create things using just their imaginations and the materials at hand. It is the epitome of what an open-ended activity is and fosters cognitive and social development.  This exhibit adds to the wealth of experiences at the Museum that gives children the skills they need to succeed in school and in life.”

According to the Children’s Museum of Phoenix, these kinds of activates support learning that takes place in a traditional classroom setting.

Wish list items include bottle caps, plastic food containers, plastic lids, packing materials, cardboard materials, yarn, egg cartons and more.
