Moved by a Hospital’s Kind Care, a Family Returns the Favor

By Jamie Killin
There are few things as frightening for a parent as watching their child fight for their life in a hospital.
That’s an experience Josh and Tiffany Haselhorst have had to live through multiple times — first when their son Cameron was born at a mere two pounds, and again when he was three and diagnosed with a lung condition that gave the young boy a five percent chance of survival.
The experience was made a bit easier by the attentiveness and communication of St. Joseph’s Hospital & Medical Center.
“Because he was on life support there were two nurses in his room at all times, so they became family at that point and we were constantly talking to them and finding out what was going on, asking questions and learning things we thought we’d never learn in life,” said Tiffany Haselhorst.
Fortunately, the hospital, Cameron, and his parents never stopped fighting, and thanks to their efforts, Cameron is now a healthy 14-year-old.
His parents have continued their fight by attempting to improve the lives of Valley children who have been forced to fight for their lives like Cameron and to support St. Joseph’s hospital, with the Cameron T. Golf Tournament.
The tournament, which began as an initiative started by family and friends to help with the Haselhorst’s medical costs, has led to donations of over $100,000 to the hospital.
“The turnout of the tournament alone was like ‘Wow, people really do care,’ so we decided at that point that we would take it further and ask those people and other people in the community to help pay it forward and make it a yearly thing,” said Haselhorst.
The event, which is in its 11th year, hosts between 100 and 140 players and raises $10,000-$15,000 each year.
These donations help support the intensive care units for children and infants, and the Haselhorts hope their contribution will help make the difficult experience better for parents who have experiences the same trials they have.
“The hospital is a super scary place and I just want to make it as easy as possible for any parent that’s ever been through anything we’ve gone through,” said Haselhorst.
