Take a Break From Breakfast, Help End Child Hunger

Valley of the Sun United Way is teaming up with News 92.3 KTAR-FM to help end hunger in the classroom, and provide breakfast to the children who need it most to learn, grow and succeed in school.
The #BreakFromBreakfast initiative is asking community members to take a break from breakfast, and instead donate the money they would use to buy their morning meal to Breakfast in the Classroom.
Breakfast in the Classroom is a program that has partnered with the Arizona Department of Education and the Dairy Council of Arizona to provide children with a healthy breakfast so they are more likely to be focused on learning the rest of the day and succeed in their studies.
“Students who skip breakfast are shown to disrupt instruction time, derail teacher’s lessons, interrupt other students, and leave the classroom to go to the school nurse or principal,” said Jayson Matthews, director of ending hunger of Valley of the Sun United Way.  “Data also shows that hungry students aren’t learning what they need to learn to be successful.”
Children who might not have access to breakfast are 50 percent more likely to miss school and have to repeat a grade, and are twice as likely to be suspended.
“We’re excited to partner with KTAR to bring awareness to this issue,” Matthews said, “The funds raised will help us to continue our mission of providing students with breakfast in the classroom. We’ve already helped 67 schools with 47,000 students and look forward to expanding our reach.”
#BreakFromBreakfast participants will receive a free breakfast from First Watch restaurant and will be entered into a contest to win free breakfast for a year.
