Lon Babby Elected to Arizona Community Foundation Board

Lon Babby, former President of basketball operations for the Phoenix Suns, has been elected to the board of directors of the Arizona Community Foundation.

During a six-year relationship with the Suns that began in 2010, Babby guided the team through a transition period with a focus on building for the future. His tenure also brought upgrades to the team’s medical and training staff, now regarded as an industry leader, and an increased emphasis on the innovative use of analytics.

Prior to joining the Suns, Babby was a player agent, representing Ray Allen, Shane Battier, Tim Duncan and Grant Hill. Babby also represented Major League Baseball players and the WNBA’s Tamika Catchings.

With almost 35 years as a practicing attorney at Washington D.C.-based Williams & Connolly, LLP, Babby was identified as one of Washington’s Top Lawyers for media and sports law by Washingtonian magazine.

“Lon’s extensive background in law and business and the insights that come from his experience in the sports community are of tremendous value to the Arizona Community Foundation and the Jerry Colangelo Center for Sports Philanthropy,” said Shelley Cohn, chair of the Arizona Community Foundation Board of Directors. “He will be a great addition to our board.”

A graduate of Lehigh University and Yale Law School, Babby has served as an adjunct professor of law at George Washington University Law School. He began his career as a litigator and handled several high-profile cases including the defense of John Hinckley, Jr., who shot President Reagan. He is a member of the board of trustees of the Naismith Memorial Basketball Hall of Fame and in 2007 was elected to the Greater Washington D.C. Jewish Sports Hall of Fame.

Babby is the incoming chair of the board of trustees for the Phoenix chapter of the Positive Coaching Alliance and a vice chair for the board of directors of the Phoenix Symphony. He joined the Be A Leader Foundation to mentor high school students.
