A Phoenix Original

I am a secret groupie of the great Billie Jo Herberger.  She captivates me in so many ways, unlike any other person I have ever known.  She is the definition of ebullience tinged with charm that is deeply genuine.  I think she gives me permission to avoid the behavior of urbanity which is an affectation so easily assumed.
I was reminded of this at the recent Sandra Day O’Connor Institute Dinner with Jefferson.  A prestigious award was extended to the Pulitzer Prize winning author Jon Meacham.  The adroit writer and speaker graced our city with his wit and charm over a meal that was designed to reflect the table of President Thomas Jefferson.  In what I call cutlery diplomacy, Meacham spoke of the collaboration it took to get the country going, often over food and wine.  At the end of Meacham’s remarks, which were some of the most enlightening I have heard in a long time, the presidential scholar was presented with a sculpture created by an Arizona artist.
As the award was conferred to Mr. Meacham, it was revealed that the sculptor was none other than the legendary John Waddell.  Yes, the same artist who brought to life the bronze dancers that welcome art patrons to the Herberger Theater.
I silently wondered, “Jeeze, I hope Meacham knows what a big deal this is!”
At the same time, while ruminating on the thought of having an original Waddell as a speaker’s gift, I heard the excited gasp of Billie Jo from the table behind me.  “Oh Judd!” she whispered with a gush, “It’s one of John’s best works!”
Without turning around, I knew the passionate enthusiasm burst forth from Billie Jo Herberger.  She is always the first one to celebrate another’s success and the verve of the moment.
There has never been a time when she didn’t greet me with a vivacious welcome.  Billie Jo always seems to know what I am up to or if she does not, she asks.  She engages and she connects the dots.
I like to think that Billie Jo confers her sense of style upon me as well.  She is drawn to the colors and textures of life.  A woman who could have any bauble she wants, chooses to wear jewelry that she has often created herself.  With funky beads often discovered at the Tucson Gem and Mineral Show, this original delights in the creative process of beadwork.  Billie Jo is also enchanted by the secrets of long ago woven antique silks, flowing gowns and whimsical accessories.  I like that.  I admire that.
Billie Jo Herberger is vital and passionate in the journey we call life and it shows.  She is the epitome of grace and aplomb, yet can be mischievous with a wink of an eye.  I adore her presence in our community and the beguiling way she navigates us all.
When I am with Billie Jo I want to throw off my shackles of sensible pumps and serious suits.  I want to be more curious, more fun and most importantly… more in the moment.
From the heart…
