Design Meets Style Head On!
Great salon, for great hair! Zolton’s Salon and Spa, a full-service salon in Scottsdale, recently won Best Salon Design in North America from the Professional Beauty Association. More than 1,000 salons competed for the best salon category but Zolton’s took the 2014 spot. The salon’s ambiance, style and architecture won the judges over. This is the first Arizona salon to be honored with the NAHA award.
Since clients often tell their darkest secrets to their stylists, we thought we would turn the chair and ask Robert Quinn, Salon Owner of Zolton’s some things…
How did you decide on your style submissions?
For years I have had visions of different avant garde looks that I wanted to bring to life. This is a very challenging category of work where you have to expose yourself, your dreams and your visions for these highly creative looks. With the right vision and ability, I was able to achieve what I wanted.
Is this your first time competing?
I first began submitting looks to NAHA in 1995. I have submitted for different categories six times, have been nominated as a finalist twice and won my first award this year.
What does it take to execute these styles?
The process is long and intensive. I first began my research and thinking of concepts 11 months before the award entry was due. Then, three months before they were due we went to New York City and worked with professional models, make-up artists, fashion stylists and editorial photographers to bring the looks to life and capture them on film. To give you a sense of timing, it took 12 hours per model to complete their hair, makeup, wardrobe and the photo shoot. With a dedicated team around me, we were able to complete and capture all of these looks in just seven days.
What was the inspiration of these avante garde styles?
I was looking to execute the impossible.
TALK ABOUT BIG HAIR!
To create these looks we had to incorporate a lot of extra hair into the model’s hair. As you can imagine by the size and details in the looks, they quickly became very heavy and difficult to wear. But our models kept their heads up, literally, and pulled off the looks with style and grace.
How does it feel to win best salon?
It feels brilliant. It’s every stylist’s dream to win a NAHA award. It’s an especially great feeling to be the first to win in NAHA award in Arizona.
