100.000th Student Group_Trevor Browne HS at MIM_3.26.2014Sixty-seven Trevor Browne High School students received special treatment Wednesday, March 26, on a field trip to Phoenix’s Musical Instrument Museum. As they passed through the doors, the group topped the 100,000-student milestone since MIM began offering school field trips in October 2010. The museum will celebrate its fourth anniversary on April 24.

The eleventh graders, who received free admission thanks to a Target Corporation grant, also were given a plush Bullseye Target dog; free admission to the special traveling exhibition Women Who Rock: Vision, Passion, Power; and a coupon to return to MIM with their families for free with one paid adult admission. (Bullseye, a bull terrier, is Target Corporation’s official mascot and is featured in its advertising and marketing materials.)

The students also toured all five of MIM’s major Geographical Galleries, where they learned about diverse musical traditions, and how instruments have changed over time as humans have moved around the globe and interacted with each other. Many of the students also visited the Experience Gallery where they played instruments from around the world.

According to Education Manager Carly Ofsthun, the number of schools using MIM as a teaching resource is growing, as is the need for corporate and individual donations to support the museum’s educational mission. “Approximately 33,000 students visited MIM as part of a school-group tour last year (2013),” she said. “We project 50,000 students, or nearly 300 students per day when school is in session, will visit MIM as part of a field trip during 2014.”

MIM offers seven highly customizable field-trip options that align with Arizona state and College and Career Readiness standards in English language arts, museum education, physical education, science and social studies.

Arizona educators interested in learning about MIM’s school-group tours and other educational resources are encouraged to visit MIM in July. The museum will offer free admission throughout the month to current Arizona K−12 grade teachers, school and district administrators, registered student teachers, teacher’s aides and homeschool educators.

On Teacher Preview Days, July 19 and 27, educators will enjoy a live musical performance by one of the Artists in Residence for the year, have a sneak peek at MIM’s newest school-tour option, learn about curricula for teachers to use with their students pre- and post-visit, and receive information about grant opportunities.

There are still opportunities to schedule tours during the current academic year if schools act quickly. For information, call MIM’s school-tour coordinator at 480-245-6919 or e-mail grouptours@MIM.org. To make a donation to support MIM’s education program, call 480-478-6062.
