Women Who Rock: Vision, Passion, Power
On Saturday, October 19, the Musical Instrument Museum in Phoenix will open “Women Who Rock: Vision, Passion, Power,” created by the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame and Museum. This groundbreaking and provocative exhibition highlights the flashpoints, the firsts, the best, the celebrated and sometimes lesser-known women who moved popular music and American culture forward.
The exhibition will be housed in MIM’s Target Gallery through April 20, 2014, and admission is $7 when purchased with general museum admission or $10 for the exhibition only. “Women Who Rock” is sponsored locally by Bank of America, APS, azcentral.com and Storage Solutions.
The exhibition spotlights more than 70 artists and features instruments, original handwritten lyrics, stage outfits, concert posters and videos from artists including Billie Holiday, Maybelle Carter, Aretha Franklin, Janis Joplin, Patti Smith, Madonna, Cyndi Lauper and more! The exhibition weaves a powerful and engaging narrative that demonstrates how women have been engines of creation and change in popular music, from the early years of the 20th century to the present. Notable artifacts include Lady Gaga’s meat dress, Wanda Jackson’s acoustic guitar, Joan Jett’s leather jacket, Bessie Smith’s “Oh Daddy Blues” sheet music and many more.
“With decades’ worth of creativity, struggle, innovation and success represented in this single exhibition, guests will have a real opportunity to be entertained and moved, and to leave with the desire to contribute something of their own,” said MIM curator Dr. Cullen Strawn. “Experiencing this along with the exhibits in MIM’s Geographical Galleries will make for a visit immersed in passionate and powerful music from all parts of the world.”
MIM invites the public to celebrate the opening of the exhibition with a variety of activities for the entire family on Saturday, October 19, from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. Guests can learn to play a chord on an electric guitar, receive a “rock star” makeover and learn about female musicians highlighted in MIM’s collection on a mini tour. MIM Music Theater will also host performances by some of Phoenix’s fiercest female musicians, including Pick and Holler, French Girls and Catfish Mustache. All activities are included with paid museum admission.
Café Allegro will serve a variety of dishes inspired by the artists featured in the “Women Who Rock” exhibition on opening day from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m., all available for purchase. The menu will include Lady Gaga’s Meat Dress Salad (grass-fed beef carpaccio over organic lettuces with “The Edge of Glory” dressing, toasted pine nuts, brioche croutons, olives and Rainbow Valley smoked cheese), Gertude “Ma” Rainey Pork Ribs (slow-cooked, Georgia-style pork ribs with “Prove it On My Blues” barbeque sauce, creamy grits and ham-hock, slow-cooked collard greens) and the Wanda Jackson “Funnel of Love” Cake.
Guests can also unleash their inner rock star with items for sale at the Museum Store that are inspired by the women who made music history. Girly meets glam with artist t-shirts, heavy metal jewelry, glittery purses, stunner shades and chic home décor. Celebrate the decades of women who rocked into our hearts and stereos with MIM’s vast collection of music and nostalgic treasures. These items will be available for purchase throughout the duration of the exhibition.
In conjunction with the exhibition, MIM will also host a concert series that features a variety of female performers. The lineup currently includes “Women Who Rock: Saluting the Pioneers” featuring Maria Muldaur, Marcia Ball, Tracy Nelson and Del Rey performing the groundbreaking music of Sister Rosetta Tharpe & Memphis Minnie on October 15 and 16; Wanda Jackson on October 19; Ronnie Spector on October 30; and Shemekia Copeland on November 20. Additional “Women Who Rock” concerts and events will be added through April 2014. The “Women Who Rock” concert series is sponsored by Bank of America.
